Dump trucks
in Welland

Cameron's has dispatched trucks to Welland sites for decades, on jobs from one tri-axle for a day to crews on multi-season civil work. Tri-axles from owner-operators based in Niagara, through one dispatch desk, 24 hours a day.

Dispatch is (905) 988-5454. The office answers Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.

What gets hauled in Welland

Most Welland work is four kinds of job: aggregate deliveries, commercial site prep, road reconstruction, and excess soil hauled off to approved disposal sites. The employment lands along the canal bypass and the Highway 140 corridor, and the City's road, sewer and watermain renewals, are where much of it happens. Tri-axles move gravel, stone and excavated soil between the active site, the quarry and the disposal site, and a short cycle is what makes the truck earn its day.

Cameron's supplies trucks to municipal and Regional projects across Niagara through the year. Which projects changes with each year's program, so the page does not list them; dispatch knows what is running this season.

Where the material comes from, and where it goes

Welland has no working quarry of its own, so stone comes in from three directions. Limestone and granular from the Escarpment arrive down Highway 406. Quarries at the south end of the canal feed Welland sites up Highway 140 and through the Main Street Tunnel. Sand and gravel come off the Fonthill Kame to the west. On a Welland job the source is rarely more than a short cycle away in some direction.

Excess soil and demolition debris have a destination inside the city: the Region's Humberstone Landfill on Humberstone Road takes clean concrete, brick and asphalt by the tonne, construction and demolition waste, and commercial clean soil with the Region's approval first. The Thorold Townline depot, up the 406, takes clean concrete as well. Tipping fees change yearly; dispatch confirms the current rate when the job is booked.

Ontario's excess soil regulation (O. Reg. 406/19) requires every load of excess soil leaving a site to travel with a hauling record naming where it came from, where it is going and how much, and the hauler keeps it. From January 1, 2027, clean excess soil can no longer go to landfill, so the reuse site is part of planning the job.

Rules that change a Welland job

Two ways across the canal. The shipping canal bypass cuts off the east side of the city, and only two roads cross it: the Main Street Tunnel on East Main Street and the Townline Tunnel on Highway 58A. Everything bound for the Highway 140 corridor, the Ridge Road employment lands or Port Colborne goes through one of them, and a loaded tri-axle's cycle time is set by the tunnel as much as by the distance.

Spring reduced loads. From March 1 to April 30 the Region limits trucks to five tonnes per axle on posted roads. In Welland that covers West Main Street between Prince Charles Drive and Niagara Street, Woodlawn Road between South Pelham Road and Rice Road, Niagara Street from West Main to Riverbanks Street, and Rice Road from Woodlawn to Thorold Road. A tri-axle that runs a full load in May runs a fraction of one in March on those stretches, so dispatch plans the truck count for it.

Truck routes. Welland signs heavy trucks off its residential streets and onto a spine of Highway 406, Highway 140, Highway 58 and the Regional roads, with designated City streets reaching the industrial land; some carry daytime-only limits. Dispatch routes to the signage when a site address is given.

Working hours. The City's noise by-law prohibits construction and excavation noise between 6pm and 7am, so a Welland site runs trucks from 7am to 6pm unless the City has granted an exemption. Dispatch schedules the first load to land when the site can legally take it.

Trucks on Welland sites

Jobs here run on tri-axle dump trucks, which typically carry 20 to 22 metric tonnes. Screened grindings and aggregates are delivered by the truckload the same way.

Every truck on a Welland job is paid the same rate, whoever owns it.

Questions people ask

Do spring load limits affect Welland jobs?
On posted roads, yes. From March 1 to April 30 the Niagara Region limits trucks to five tonnes per axle, and several Welland roads are on the list, including Woodlawn Road between South Pelham Road and Rice Road, Niagara Street from West Main to Riverbanks Street, and Rice Road from Woodlawn to Thorold Road. Dispatch plans the truck count around it.
What hours can trucks run on a Welland site?
The City's noise by-law prohibits construction and excavation noise between 6pm and 7am, so a Welland site runs trucks from 7am to 6pm unless the City has granted an exemption.
How do I book trucks for a Welland site?
Call dispatch at (905) 988-5454 with the site, the start date, how many trucks and the material. Dispatch runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and the request form on the Companies page reaches the same desk.
